Ruth Gave Us Our Miracle Babies

Woman's Day, August 26, 2002

This Australian therapist's herbal remedies have offered salvation to hundreds of couples wanting to conceive naturally

To her legion of loyal fans, Queensland natural therapist Ruth Sharkey was best known as 'the baby-maker'. And for very good reason . Over a period of six years she was credited with the arrival of a staggering 2070 babies, including Tanya and Robert Mogg's daughter, Tyla, and Tania and Adrian Salvati's children, Tianna and Benjamin.

When Tanya Mogg was first diagnosed with polycystic ovaries fourteen years ago, doctors explained to her that fertility treatment was her only chance of falling pregnant. But Tanya and husband Robert decided if they couldn't conceive naturally it was simply not meant to be.

"A friend of mine spoke in glowing terms about Ruth, and how she used natural herbs to aid fertility," Tanya said.

"I contacted her, providing my full medical history, which she then used to determine the type of formula I needed.

"I'd take the liquid herbs, making notes of temperature changes and my physical wellbeing, which Ruth would evaluate for the next formula."

Even after trying to conceive without success for eight years, Tanya and Robert never gave up hoping. "We didn't want to dwell on it. There was a good possibility that it might never happen, but we accepted that."

Then, just a month after she suffered a miscarriage at six weeks, Tanya fell pregnant again. And, on 3rd March 2001, she gave birth to a bouncing baby girl, Tyla, who tipped the scales at 3 kg.

"It was just fantastic," Tanya said. "I have no doubt it was because of my persistence with Ruth's herbs that I now have a healthy child. It took a long time for my body to get into a condition that would allow for conception."

As the author of many books, including Natural Conception, Ruth confirmed, "I was not offering some miracle cure or secret magic potion with my fertility herbs. A lot of it had to do with simple common sense and, in many cases, a complete diet and lifestyle change."

That seemed to be exactly what helped 32-year-old Tania Salvati to conceive. She had a mild form of endometriosis and an irregular cycle.

When all efforts to fall pregnant failed, she and husband Adrian, 38, turned to artificial insemination. "But that didn't work either," explained Tania. "There was the last option of IVF, but we still decided to pin our faith on natural conception."

Tania had seen Ruth talking of fertility problems on TV, and contacted her clinic on the Gold Coast. "I read her books on the importance of balancing the body in preparation for pregnancy. And because it's natural, it appealed to us."

Within six months of taking Ruth's herbal formulas to correct a hormone imbalance, Tania was greeted with two small red lines in her home pregnancy test. She didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

The result was positive but, because the couple had had many heartbreaking false alarms, Tania kept a cautious lid on her emotions. "I was trembling," she confessed, "it seemed too good to be true."

The champagne only began flowing when a blood test confirmed the pregnancy. "It was one of the most joyous moments in our lives," Tania smiled. She later gave birth to their eldest, Tianna, now three.

Tania stopped taking Ruth's herbal formula and fell pregnant again, but sadly miscarried.

"So I went back to Ruth and, just six months later, I was pregnant with Benjamin," she said.

Now, Tania and Adrian are the proud parents of Tianna and Benjamin, eleven months, and are trying for at least one more.
