"The rustle of healing herbs can lead to the patter of tiny feet for infertile couples, even when IVF has failed," said Ruth Sharkey.
She often received phone calls and letters from happy parents-to-be, like this one: "A miracle has happened! I am now nine weeks pregnant after two and a half years of trying."
Mrs Sharkey has diplomas in herbalism, homeopathy and clinical hypnotherapy and recently published her Natural Conception book.
She said many of the couples she saw in her clinic have had repeated attempts at infertility treatment, failing to conceive with the drugs, surgery and laparoscopic intervention of in vitro fertilisation and related procedures.
"They've really been through the mill," she said.
The women have had blocked tubes, polycystic ovaries, endometriosis; the men have had low sperm counts.
But remarkable results have come for quite a few through individual remedies, including herbs with lovely names steeped in history, mystique and tradition, such as Agnus Castus, and True and False Unicorn.
Of course, there may be an element of coincidence, at least for some. After all, there are occasional stories about so-called miracle babies conceived after couples have given up all thoughts of a family following failed IVF attempts.
"We brought their bodies into balance," Ruth said, stressing that there was no such thing as a specific fertility formula.
