Queensland's 100 Most intruiging Women – No. 55, Ruth Sharkey

Fertile imagination pays off

Couples travel from all around the world to see Ruth Sharkey. All of them with the same dream - to have a baby. Ruth is a herbalist, homeopath and an author who has gained quite a reputation as a miracle worker. She has had huge success in helping couples conceive.

Ruth Sharkey, author of Natural Conception - Mother Nature's help for infertile couples, says her success in helping couples conceive is just common sense. "I use herbs and homeopathic therapy to help balance the hormones."

"When couples come to me they are usually desperate. They have tried everything and feel that they are a lost cause. I find that chemistry is often the problem.

"The excessive use of chemicals in today's society is having a huge adverse effect on fertility.

"Male sperm count has dropped 60% since World War II and I don't believe that has anything to do with stress. It was very stressful during the war and they were having babies everywhere."

Ruth concentrates on cleansing the body of all chemicals and toxins with the use of herbs.

"I have been called a quack, but I have also been called a miracle worker. People can decide for themselves. Have you had a particularly challenging client?

Yes. I'll never forget her. She was a woman who flew from Los Angeles to see me. She was menopausal but had just married a young fellow and was desperate to have a child with him. She was so desperate she was totally 'hyper', really over the top. I tried to explain to her that if her periods had stopped there was not a lot I could do. But she insisted a psychic had told her she would have a child, so it must be true. She was so crazy I thought I should treat her for her hyperactivity and try to calm her down. I put her on program, but her periods returned and she is now on a fertility program in America.

Is it true that men should wear boxer shorts rather than underpants?

Yes. If the testes get overheated you end up cooking the tadpoles before they leave home. Temperature is vital when trying to conceive.

What do you think of women flocking to touch the fertility statue on the coast?

I believe it can work. I think it is all psychological. If you really believe and have hope that it will work then that reaction releases a positive chemistry into your body. That is why couples often end up conceiving at a time when they have actually given up - when they are relaxed.

When was your happiest moment?

When my book, Natural conception - Mother Nature's help for infertile couples became a best-seller in twenty-eight days. Infertility is a huge problem and there is a huge demand for literature on it.

When was your saddest moment?

When my son-in-law was killed four years ago.

What is your worst fault?

I work far too hard. I work day and night.

What is your philosophy in life?

Try to do the best you can each and every day.

lf you were to return in another life what would you come back as?

I'd come back as a tomcat. The ones that live around here seems to have a whale of a time.

What makes you laugh?

I'd laugh at anything. When you work around the clock you are glad of any release.

When was the last time you cried?

When one of my cats, Oliver, had to be put down. He was with me for thirteen years.

How do you relax?

I love to paint and I make sure that I do a little bit every night before bedtime, even if it is only a touch or two with the brush.

What is your biggest ambition?

I want to get our new Queensland clinic up and running. That has always been my and Dennis' ambition.

Have you any regrets?

Yes. Moving from Queensland to New South Wales. We have been here for only two years, but I can't wait to get back into Queensland.

Who has had the biggest influence on you?

No one really. I feel I've had to do a lot for myself. I was widowed from my first husband when I was 24 and that was hard. I had three kids and had to start all over again on my own. I had to work really hard.

Who is your favourite singer?

Neil Diamond.

What is your favourite movie?

Jonathan Livingstone Seagull with Neil Diamond.

What advice would you give to a couple who are trying to conceive?

Look at diet and your lifestyle. Stay off coffee and Coca-Cola or anything that stimulates the system. You want your body's chemistry to be natural. Shift workers can have a lot more problems because their natural body clocks are disrupted.

What has been your biggest success?

My family is my pride and joy. I have had four beautiful children and now seven wonderful grandchildren.

Where will you be in ten years?

Hopefully, I will be retired and my family will continue my work.
