Tonsils and Grommets – Look for Reasons

Every day I expected to see at least one child with either tonsilitis or ear problems, and usually they had been repeatedly treated with antibiotics. The parents brought the child to me because the next step was to have grommets put in the ears, or the child already had them in place but the problem still existed.

It saddened me that no one seemed to look for any reasons as to why there was a build up of mucus etc in the glands and ears of these children. When asked, the parents did not know why it was happening - all they wanted from me were 'natural antibiotics', because they could see the child was needing stronger and more powerful ones from their doctors.

They were amazed when I asked about inherent factors and possible contacts with chemicals that could have been concomitant causes of the child's recurrent illness; it was as if the problem was considered to be the child's fault alone.

I asked why the glands were not coping, draining as nature intended them to, and why there was such a build-up of phlegm in the first place. Was there some kind of blockage in the throat and the tonsils, or was the thyroid gland slightly enlarged? Did the glands become enlarged during sleep when the metabolism slowed, preventing normal drainage during the night? If so, could it be that saliva secretions were backing up into the sinuses etc to become stagnant, thus allowing bacteria to invade?

The rise in temperature that ensues is the body's natural way of destroying these bacteria, so any antibiotics given to lower the temperature will unfortunately wipe out all the beneficial microorganisms in the body too.

Actually weakening the body's hitherto highly efficient immune system, the glands then cannot cope with sudden large numbers of dead bacteria and they become blocked, which in turn weakens the whole system.

So, the answer is not a natural antibiotic, or any other kind of antibiotic, but a blend of herbs to stimulate the glandular system to help it to get rid of the build-up, with other herbs to strengthen the chi or bodily energy and help the immune and other systems, including the endocrine glands. This brings us back to the thyroid gland, which, as I mentioned earlier, is found in the throat. Very often I found it was a factor to be considered. The herbs I would therefore consider would be Irish Moss, Echinacea, Thyme, Rosehips, Calendula and Syrup of Marshmallow.
