As seen on TV

The Overweight

November heralds the beginning of the festive season, the long hot days followed by sultry evenings shared with friends around the barbie or pool enjoying drinks and nibbles; as the sausages sizzle many eagerly change into their bathers for a swim.

That is, those who are blessed by nature with normal sized bodies do. The overweight frequently and sadly told me that they looked on the pool party season with dread and loathing. They wouldn't be seen dead in bathers, and for them sausages, nibbles and drinks were strictly taboo.

The long hot days made them sweaty and tired, and the noise at parties creates migraines. The food only represents the enemy, which is all very depressing. While I readily acknowledge that some weight problems are caused by overeating the wrong foods, I also understand the frustration of those people who were told to reduce weight for their health's sake, but their bodies wouldn't co-operate. They have tried all the diets, including starvation, yet the weight remains.

The problem is within their metabolism or electrolyte functions. In other words the glands are malfunctioning and they are holding water. Not enough to show up in blood tests, but enough to keep the weight on and produce other annoying symptoms, like losing hair, mood swings, excessive sweating, sweet cravings and a bloated feeling after eating.

In my book Healing the Bodies I have explained in great detail the symptoms that occur when the glands are malfunctioning, and I have listed the actions of over ninety herbs that can help to bring them back into balance.

These include; Fennel to reduce the appetite, Kelp to aid the thyroid gland, Dandelion to flush the liver and kidneys, Fringe Tree to help the spleen, Goat's Rue and many others for diabetes and hypoglycaemia, and Clivers, which has been used for centuries to reduce the uric acid levels in the body - something that is often found to be high in overweight people.
