Menopause – The Other End of the Female Cycle

It never failed to amaze me how, in spite of all the really intelligent and informative information written about 'the menopause', I would still have to explain almost daily to both men and women that it is not some sort of dreaded disease that transforms all women into frigid brainless neurotics. (OK, I have to admit some women can be like that, but that is probably a normal state for them ...)

Joking aside, it is surprising the number of adults who do think the menopause is an illness that must be avoided at all cost, when in actual fact it is simply the ending of the woman's years of menstruation. YIPPEE!!! To my mind only a masochist would want to carry on beyond their 'expiry date'. Only during pregnancy, stress, excessive exercise, or while taking drugs to inhibit the period, can a woman be free of this perfectly normal and natural female function.

What is not natural and normal is any discomfort that comes with the slowing down of her hormone production. Thankfully, scientists have gone to great lengths to provide plenty of hormonal replacement options to make sure we do not suffer unduly. However, there are many women who, for a variety of reasons, cannot tolerate these. So I would like to remind everyone that, long before the scientist's wives demanded they do something to help with menopause problems, there were dozens of herbs being successfully used to aid the hormone activity.

The four female hormones are oestrogen, progesterone, luteal and follicle stimulating and, just as it is important for these to be properly balanced to prevent period hassles and promote healthy pregnancies, it is also necessary that they be produced harmoniously as a woman enters menopause. If they aren't, she could experience all sorts of odd symptoms.

The Chinese herb Dong Quai, for instance, has been used for centuries as a female tonic; so has Wild Yam, Feverfew and Hypericum. Not all women have problems with 'flushing', but some may be temporarily 'nervy' or have problems sleeping. For them, I blended the herbs differently using perhaps Vervain, Pulsatilla, Valerian, Passiflora or maybe the homeopathic Ignatia. It is a matter of getting the right blend for the right person; we are all individuals and that's what makes us special.
