In September 1994 I mentioned how herbs frequently can help women who are having difficulties falling pregnant. At the time, I briefly mentioned that men too could be helped with herbs, should they be impotent.
I would like to elaborate on that statement, as there are many other reasons that I didn't mention why a couple could be taking longer than they expected to have a baby. Often there is a simple hormonal imbalance in the woman, but very frequently the problem is with the would-be father.
Physical impotence is only one possibility; more often the cause is a low sperm count or some abnormality of the sperm, including malfunctions, i.e. the sperm clump together, which makes it impossible for them to fertilise the female egg. In my books Healing the Bodies and Natural Conception I have explained how easy it is, with the aid of the right herbs, to normalise the female and male reproductive systems, but it is most important to find out the cause of the problem.
One aspect that is often overlooked when seeking the cause is the lifestyle of the male, including the workplace. Recent research has shown that commonly-used substances can affect male fertility - the main ones that seem to provide the risk factors are oil paints and strong-smelling glues etc.
Another noteworthy factor is that when the men switched to naturally-brewed beer and reduced their Coca-Cola/Pepsi (especially the diet ones) and instant coffee intake, the sperm count rose quite significantly. Also, the adrenalin we produce when under any kind of pressure can add to accumulated toxins and create imbalances throughout the whole body, which in turn upsets both the male and female reproductive systems. X-rays too, when taken on the lower back and pelvic areas, have in some instances been found to cause infertility for up to three years after the patient was exposed to them.
The herbs chosen to treat men and women with hormonal problems cannot unfortunately be generalised and listed, as each person has individual imbalances, but the evidence of the success of herbs in treating infertility is easy to see and hold.
