Precocious puberty, adolescence, pre-menstrual tension, infertility, postnatal depression, menopause. Do you know what is the common denominator that is linking all these conditions? Or what makes a lovely little girl - the apple of her dad's eye - overnight become a sulky, weepy, provocative wench? That's right, it's her HORMONES!
What is it that turns a mother's pride and joy - her boy - into a gangly, pimply, stroppy, uncommunicative drongo? Again, it's all in the HORMONES!
Can you explain how a beautiful young woman can be a loving wife and mother for twenty-five days of the month, then turn into a screaming shrew for the other three days? You guessed it, HORMONES!
Do you know what prevents normal healthy couples from conceiving a baby when they want to? Right again. HORMONES!
Have you tried to explain what causes a loving mother to suffer deep intolerable depression after giving birth to a beautiful healthy baby? Try checking her HORMONES! How come some otherwise perfectly sane, usually rational people commit murder in a fit of passion? They lose control of their HORMONES!
If you are over fifty, have you ever asked yourself why is it that now, when you think you are well past all the emotional drama of raising a family etc, when the mortgage is under control and you are starting to figure out what life is all about, your hormones start playing up again and causing all the best-laid plans to be thrown to the four winds - again?
If kept under control the human hormone production can be a constant source of fascination and enjoyment, but if there is a problem anywhere in the body which causes a hormonal imbalance it can totally wreck the life of the person who has the problem, as well as anyone who has the misfortune to share a part of their lives with them, i.e. family, friends, work and school mates.
So why do some people breeze through their lives totally oblivious to the fact that they even have hormones, while others are plagued by these chemical manipulators from birth? Unfortunately, we are all controlled by the way these glands mix up our own specific chemical cocktails.
Hereditary factors, of course, play the major role in determining how the chemicals in an individual are produced, but the diet, lifestyle and other so-called harmless chemicals in our environment also play a part in creating the body secretions and the way they react on the physical, mental and spiritual bodies.
Anorexia, alcoholism, bulimia, constipation, diabetes, goitre, chronic fatigue, amenorrhoea, depression, irritable bowel syndrome and infertility, to mention just a few, are problems that can be directly traced back to an imbalance from one or more of the hormone-producing glands. So it is that hormones, from their conception or creation through to their utilisation, continuously affect us as we blissfully go about our lives.
For years I have been fascinated how they work. That is why I first wrote The Mysterious Powers in Man and Plants. In this book I have endeavoured to explain how the body's hormone-producing glands go about making these chemical time bombs.
I have also shown what happens when there is an imbalance in the internal functions of the glands and how this can affect our health and wellbeing in many different ways, long before a recognised disease state is apparent.
Included in the book are over 150 complaints listed alphabetically, along with the herbs that can help them to begin to heal themselves.
