Master Three confidently led the way into my consulting room, then astonished me by announcing: “My mummy said you made me, now we would like a brother!” His mother grinned meekly, “Guess why we're here?”
She then reminded me that she had had fertility problems on her first visit some four years earlier, and the herbs given successfully balanced her hormones, making conception possible. But after taking the contraception pill for approximately two years, she was again experiencing the same problems.
I explained that the pill often lowers the production of progesterone or causes imbalances to other female hormones, namely the oestrogen, luteal and follicle stimulating hormones. These levels can be ascertained by a blood test taken around the fourteenth day of a woman's cycle, or daily body temperatures and mood changes recorded on a simple graph can show variations.
Being a medical herbalist and an old wife, I considered myself qualified to use treatments that have been referred to as 'old wives' tales', i.e. the herbs Squawvine, Blue Cohosh, Unicorn root, Black Haw and Raspberry Leaf as infertility and pregnancy aids, or Damiana, Saw Palmetto, Sarsaparilla and Ginseng for impotence, with diet modification to help determine the sex of the baby.
To produce a girl both parents should eat foods high in calcium and magnesium, including nuts, yoghurt, soya beans and green vegetables. Boys are made - not from slugs and snails and puppy dog tails - but fish, meat, apricots, bananas and other foods high in potassium. Parents should adapt their diets when they begin the herbals.
In Healing the Bodies I have covered over 160 individual complaints, including all types of hormonal imbalances, with appropriate herbs that can help, along with some of my concepts on how diseases occur.
