Fasting Diet

Everyone has special occasions to celebrate with family and friends, as well as the round of parties, feasts and excesses that we enjoy at Christmas and New Year.

All this good food, drink and fun can leave its toll on our health, and not only can we feel emotionally and physically exhausted but our bodies feel the strain from trying to digest it all!

For those who feel they have overdone it a little bit, I have developed a simple weekend detox fast to give the body a little bit of a helping hand, and to clear any excess feasting out of the system!

Calendula

Start on the Friday by eating as little cooked food as possible and as much raw food as you want, then on Friday night before retiring have a herbal laxative - Coloncare or something similar is fine.

On Saturday and Sunday mornings upon rising drink one glass of warm water with the juice of half a lemon.

Make a juice by squeezing one lemon, two oranges and one grapefruit, mixing with equal parts of water, and drink as much as desired during the day, supplementing this with two to five litres of water.

Over the weekend you can consume any quantity of raw vegetables and fruit, e.g. dark grapes, cherries, cucumber, raw beetroot, carrot, celery, spinach, zucchini, watercress, parsley, raw peas and beans. Make sure you chew all foods thoroughly to activate the digestive juices.

Dandelion

If more variation in drinks is required, herbal teas can be taken, ie. peppermint, rosehip, lemongrass, dandelion, chamomile, and calendula are all excellent.

Cut out daily habits like all forms of smoking, alcohol, coffee, meat and dairy products. Avoid all stress, loud television, radio, etc.

Gentle exercise can also help clear toxins, i.e. breathing exercises, yoga, aerobics, walking, swimming. If at all possible put the body into a state of rest and relaxation during fasting. The body can then access the energy to start purifying and recovering.

Essential oils can be burned or mixed into massage oils to increase the elimination of toxins from the body. Choose from juniper, lemon, lavender, patchouli and thyme.

Vitamin and mineral therapies, such as vitamins C and E, zinc, manganese, selenium, and beta-carotene (naturally occurring in carrots), can be taken to increase enzyme activity and to help the elimination process.
