Endometriosis

Every woman knows something about this condition, or has at least one female friend who has it. Yet it was not all that long ago that endometriosis had not even been heard of. So what happened within the chemistry of women to suddenly make them start producing the endometrial lining normally only found on the inside of the uterus, on the outside of the reproduction organs (fallopian tubes and ovaries), on the bladder, elsewhere within the pelvic cavity, and even on the lungs, bowel and digestive organs? Virtually on any organ in the body where the tissue could survive.

Researchers have so far failed to find a specific cause of the problem; however, they have told us that is it more common in women between the ages of thirty and forty, especially those who suffer a lot of stress. Also, they have noted that it appears to have an inherent factor, inasmuch as it is commonly found in sisters, and if a mother has the problem, the daughter appears to develop it too. Scientists have shown that those with endometriosis also have a higher than normal level of the hormone prostaglandin. This is a substance that regulates, among other things, the blood-clotting factor in the body and the spasms that are produced to move the egg to the uterus at ovulation and help expel the baby from the body at childbirth. A notable reduction in the production of luteinizing hormone has also been proven in endometriosis sufferers. When we consider it is this hormone that selects and feeds the follicle in the ovary and on its journey to the uterus, it is not surprising that reduced chances of conception would be a result. This is all very interesting to researchers, but not really any help to the woman who is experiencing extreme pain with every period, who dreads her partner's advances for fear of the pain intercourse can cause, and is an emotional wreck from the distress of not being able to fall pregnant.

I have had a lot of experience dealing with endometriosis patients, and have noted that it could be caused by a chemical imbalance within the body. When talking to women with menstrual and other hormonal problems, I suggested they stop using tampons and other internal sanitary aids. This is because I have found over the years that these products - as they are expected to - block the normal expulsion of discharges from the vagina. But the problem is that they can at the same time cause a reflux into the tubes. Coupled with the increased incidence of toxic shock among women using internal protection, the risk of endometriosis is another reason to make one stop and think about these so-called safe products.

The backflow is caused because the tubes do not get flushed out until the next ovulation and, if the pill is being ingested to prevent ovulation, the tubes do not get flushed out at all! Quite apart from the fact that this backflow could lead to inflammation of the tubes and problems like ectopic pregnancies, the other problem that can occur is that small seedlings of the endometrium could move along the tubes and escape into the abdominal cavity - thus allowing access of the endometrium to the pelvic cavity and the rest of the body, where it continues to grow with each succeeding period. As far as I am aware, there has been no research into this possibility, but it stands to reason that if the exit to the outside world is blocked the discharge will go backwards  - just like in any other plumbing. In the case of the woman with a retroverted uterus, where the tubes are below the top of the organ, or in any situation where the uterus is not sitting up straight, it is easy to understand how a backflow can occur along the tubes and out into the abdominal cavity.

I have covered the problems associated with endometriosis in my book Natural Conception - Mother Nature's help for infertile couples, and through my work with herbal medicines have been able to help many women with this condition. There are a number of herbs that can be blended together to help the endometrium to be reabsorbed into the interstitial fluid and therefore get rid of the problem altogether. The key is then to know the aggravating factors, like tampons, and steer clear of them.
