Babies and Summer Heat

At the end of each winter I hear you say 'Thank God!'  But summer, to you and I, means worsening climatic conditions, more severe storms, and hotter than usual summers.

With this in mind we need to take care of our skin, protecting it from stronger UV rays as the ozone layer struggles to maintain a protective cover around our world. Obviously, the skin of children and babies is more delicate than ours and therefore will become damaged more quickly, so I have included a few points to help you keep the little ones cool this summer.

Chamomile

One condition little children and babies can often suffer is prickly heat; this usually manifests on the neck and shoulders and other hot spots.

To soothe the itch, I suggest calamine lotion or chickweed ointment. Dried chamomile flowers or ordinary bran can also be stuffed into the foot of an old stocking or pantyhose, and then placed in the bath water. These of course have the added advantage of being completely safe and non-toxic if baby wants to suck at it as well.

Chickweed

Remember, a baby loses moisture more quickly than adults do, so give them frequent sips of water.

Baby will burn in two minutes in full sun.

  1. Prams are often fully enclosed and dark coloured - holding the heat and restricting air flow - baby could become dehydrated very quickly.
  2. Avoid man-made fabrics for baby clothes as these do not breathe - choose cotton for all clothing.
  3. Watch the direction of the sun when out walking; remember a slight bend in the street and the sun's movement can put baby in full sun.
  4. Avoid talcum powder as this cakes and irritates.
